Solos for the Cello Playe…

  1. I love Popper! I think I have said that before. 🙂 Anyway, great performance! It was a good choice.

To Ross: Fantastic! I hope you continue to accompany your talented friend!

  2. I’m glad you like the Popper!

It’s always a delight for me to play with Luke.

He makes me remember what making music is all about!

  3. I’m stunned, as always! I’ve been checking in here for a couple of weeks now, and I never get disappointed!
Keep up the -extremely- good work!

    Martin, Sweden

  4. I have to say I was taken by surprise when I first heard you. You’re quite talented, and what’s more: an Eastman alumni. My teacher also graduated from Eastman.

I’ve noticed you’ve had requests for the Faure, the Dvorak and the Elgar. While the latter two in this set would be tedious to watch, as the Dvorak is nearly an hour long, I feel the Faure would indeed be a good choice for a future video, quite possibly even Duport’s 8th etude?

On the concerto note, maybe in the future you could do a mini-series where each movement is a video? That would ease tensions on both performer and viewer alike. Just my thoughts, so don’t take them the wrong way 😀

Great show, its good to see people keeping our instrument alive! Keep it up!

  5. Thank you for all the comments. I am glad people like piano as well. I think cello and piano make a really good combination.

The Faure Elegy is a very nice piece and I am hoping to play it in the future. Thanks for those requests.

  6. Could you and your friend please play “Sonato for Cello and Piano in D minor op.40 Modrato con Moto” by Dimitri Shostakovitch. Thank you.

  7. I just saw your first episode — I really like your music. I’m 14 and I’ve been playing cello for 5 years now in our school Orchestra, and I came across this on iTunes. I’ve attempted the Prelude to Suite No. 1 by Bach, and I’m definitely not to your level of standard. I really enjoy your playing, please continue it!

  8. Keep up the great work! I would love to see other instrumental additions in the future, too.

I find your music pleasant and easy to listen to at any time of the day, but especially at night, so keep it comin’!

  9. Thanks for the wonderful music. I love this Popper music. I have never heard Popper before. And I love being able to watch a little chamber music on demand. You guys are doing all of us a great service!

  10. Did you play the violin before the cello? It looks that way because of your bow-hold :.
Anyway…I just played some Popper Hungarian Folk song Cello duets with my private teacher. Man oh man are they ever cool! I love the meter especially in Fairytale (I think that’s what it’s called). It has an 8|8 time signature, but it is written so that you feel 3 beats, then 3 beats, then 2 beats, and that happens in every measure. That song is just sooo entrancing. Im so glad to find someone that plays popper so well! Long Live the Cello!!!

  11. Neat that you also play the cello and like Hungarian music. Popper wrote such nice melodies and interesting pieces.

My bow hold sometimes slightly changes. If you look at some of the later episodes you can see I hold the bow a bit differently.

  12. Um, Rob I think I know that piece. But it wasn’t by Popper, it was by Bartok. I do also like how that piece almost sounds like it’s murmering. Wow, math in the meter. Then it changes to 9|8, then to 6|8 for a while then back to 3+3+2|8.

  13. hello!
lovely piece, i think you expressed the mood really well!
Am I right in thinking that Popper wrote for his students?

Oh yes, i haven’t quite figured out.. do episodes come out every month or is it just whenever the piece is ready?

  14. Clara – I think that Popper was touring around Europe and he needed music to play. There probably wasn’t enough music for cello. Maybe some of the pieces were for students. I am thinking the studies were.

The episodes come out about once a month, mostly when the video is ready.
