BRAVO!! That was your best performance so far! Amazing skill and confidence! Pleeeease give me some tips on playing in tune well…I’m one of those people that can get everything right but make silly intonation slips.
oh…and get some Daniel Van Goens heard/learned!

Excellent Job!! I came across your podcast on google video and now subscribed, Thank you for turning me onto the music of David Popper, too bad I can’t play his music as I’m a double bassist. You cellists always get the fun repertoire!

P you can probably play some of David Popper on Bass. The episode with the In Memory to My Parents piece might be playable.
Jo-Jackie - I’ve heard about Van Goens more than once now. I don’t know about his music. I have to learn more about him.
Olivia - I went to Eastman which is somewhat similar, it is also a music school.
The Higher Quality episodes can be best downloaded by subscribing through iTunes which is free. iTunes automatically downloads the episodes. The way it is set up now on the website is so that the videos play better on Windows computers. I will try to find an even better solution at some point.

This must be pretty incredible, since you got my 7 year old sister to say ‘Wow’. Yet another episode that will leave me in awe for at LEAST a week.

I was stunned after listening and viewing the video. I like Popper and his playfull melodies. What amazed me most was your technique. Everything seems so easy ( being an amateur cellist i know it isn’t). I’m looking forward to the next episode. thanks Jerry

A Rhapsody is a very moody piece. And you played the Rhapsody and presented each mood well. The transitions were beautiful and you put the right amound of energy into each phrase and they came out beautifully. What an emotional piece. Bravo to you !

Do you think you can upload some cello concerto performances(with the pianist)? I am currently practicing the Saint-Saens and Elgar Concerto and I am thinking of playing the Lalo Concerto next… If you can upload yourself playing with the pianist one of these three concertos, it would be great help for me. Maybe just a single movement for each piece if possible…

Thank you for the requests. I think we will do some concertos in the future, maybe not in the next few episodes but later on. The Elgar is really nice, so are the other ones.

You are incredible! I have only just discovered your site, but I am going to be checking back frequently now. Really do consider trying the Rachmaninov Sonata at some point. I gave the full name in another comment (the Vocalise I think). It would be lovely to hear that at some point.

And what a pleasure it is to hear and see you play. That is some genuinely beautiful and purposeful cello. I especially like the Popper compositions. Gorgeous melodies…double-stops of such clarity and intensity! Superb accompaniments, too, by the way. In short, BRAVO!

That is amazing, i have chosen this to be my senior solo and hope to pull it off with flying colors… any tips on this beautiful music would be quite appreciated…
i plan to make it for a full orchestra… or perhaps just the string orchestra, havnt thought of that quite yet, for i must learn the solo first!

You can buy it online or at a local sheet music store. I am not sure if it is available for free anywhere.

By any chance could you post poppers “dance of the elves”? That would be amazing! I have learned poppers “village song” and half of it was because of you and watching your technique, I won my school districts instrumental solo competition on that piece, and this is Los Angeles School District, so it is pretty big, thank you so much for posting!

This is such a fun piece! My teacher at Interlochen turned me into a Popper fan, but I only really know the etudes. He also told me I should play the Saint-Saens, and have since fallen in love with it. It would be great if you could post it.

Please, can you help?… We are desperately looking for biographical (hopefully genealogical!) details about Daniel Van Goens, 1858-1904.
This amazing guy was said to have taught cello in Strasburg Conservatoire? Anyone you know could confirm, and fill us in on him?

HEY LUKE, I WILL START LEARNING HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY SOON AND I HAVE TO SAY I AM VERY INTIMIDATED BY THE PIECE, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST PAGE. YOU SEE I HAVE DREAMED OF SOMEDAY LEARNING THE PIECE AFTER I WAS DUMBFOUNDED BY YOUR SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE, AND SUBSEQUENTLY WISH TO DO IT JUSTICE AND TO HONOR MR. POPPER. IF SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME I WOULD BE LEARNING IT ONLY IN MY THIRD YEAR OF CELLO I WOULD HAVE TOLD THEM THEY WERE CRAZY. Spencer - It is neat that you are learning this piece. I think it is a very special piece and I can see why you would want to learn it. It may be a bit of a challenge after 3 years of playing. I think my advice would be to be patient. That first page has lots of folk melodies that need a certain timing and character. Some of these things are not obvious from the written music. It takes time to make everything sound natural. The fast passages take a while to get. I hope things go well with it.
